David Close

President of the Jury

Originally from Northern Ireland now residing in Fareham, Hampshire, England with his wife Pam.

 

David was a chef in the RAF serving for 23 years prior to leaving to become a College lecturer in Catering and Hospitality.

 

David has been competing in catering competitions and sugarcraft since the late 70’s, gaining numerous awards including Best in Class in various categories along the way.

David served as an external verifier for C&G Catering and Hospitality including Sugarcraft awards 7800, 7922 and 7900 within Northern Ireland.

 

A founder Member of the Belfast Branch of the British Sugarcraft Guild and past Region 1 Representative for Northern Ireland. David has also been a Past Chairman of the Northern Ireland Cooks & Chef’s Association.


Since moving to England in 2004 to take up the post of Head of Food Safety Training for the Army David
has kept himself abreast within the hospitality industry.

 

Whilst living in England this gave David the
opportunity to expand his knowledge and enter into the role as a BSG judge following intense training.
Having competed at a high level throughout his career he was asked to judge as a sugarcraft judge at
various salon culinaires including the renowned Hotelympia and now been Head Judge for the last 2
years for biggest cake show in the world at NEC Birmingham Cake International with a total of 1800
exhibits.


Currently working for the Ministry of Defence as a Garrison Safety Officer David is enthusiastic to
expand his knowledge whilst still keeping current in the development of his craft.
